Primal Instinct: Dawn of the New World

The year is 2346.
Humankind has been nearly obliterated by the very creatures that they'd hoped to end their wars. Two centuries ago, WWIII was upon us. Nuclear warfare darkened the landscape. Radiation destroyed crops. Hunting grounds were decimated. Food and water scarcely ever found. Mankind was on the brink of extinction. One scientist came up with the final solution, hoping to end the suffering of the future generations. A new breed of human was created. Created by splicing the genes of newborn's with those of commonplace animals, this new race gained animalistic features and quickly began to evolve. The females evolved to help themselves breed while the males quickly evolved vicious natural weapons. They adapted to their surroundings, soon looking barely different than any ordinary human. Once released, these Human-Animal Hybrids swiftly carried out their mission. The total destruction of the human race was averted and a new race was given to the world.
The Scarclaws were born.
But peace would not last long. The Scarclaws were discriminated against wherever they went. They were called harbringer's of destruction, a plague on humanity. They were pushed to concentration camps throughout the globe. Soon, humans became dominant once again. But the Scarclaws, were not satisfied. Cornered like animals into their cages, their basest of instincts kicked in: Survival. The Scarclaws revolted, quickly overwhelming the humans they were once created by and breaking free of their cages in the camps. A leader was chosen. He united the Scarclaws, gave them something to fight for.
His name was Samael.
Soon, humanity was again pushed to the brink of extinction. A fourth world war was waged between what remained of the humans and the growing numbers of the Scarclaws. A choice was given to the leaders of humanity: Find a way to co-exist or fall into utter extinction.
Humanity's leaders refused.
In desperation, the very same scientists that had created the Scarclaws gathered orphans, children from around the globe with a hatred for the Scarclaws. They offered them a way to kill them all and help prevent a future of chaos and destruction. Many accepted, some were killed trying to get to their chosen facilities. Before too much longer, only a few remained. They were taken to laboratory's around the world. There, they made friends with their own kind. Close bonds were formed and families were created. They soon began to fight back. They managed to cut down most of the Scarclaws from Central America. They moved on to North America, the region with the highest concentration of Scarclaws to be killed. The Scarclaws soon found a name for these new menaces to their existence's: Half-Breeds. Humans spliced with two commonplace animal genes rather than one. They became powerful. Soon, they managed to corner a massive squad of Scarclaws.
But it was a trap.
The Scarclaws ambushed them, sent them to their graves in mere seconds. Only a few managed to escape. Now they lay in hiding, waiting for their time to rise up against their Scarclaw oppressors. They operate in secret, keeping their existence hidden. Soon, normal life settled in for them and the Scarclaws. Humanity reached annihilation and the last few remaining humans on the planet were soon taken to an unknown location. No one knows where it is or why they're being kept alive there. Only that the Scarclaws had finally won their freedom and dominated the planet.

It was a dusty day in the mountains. Too dusty to go outside and hunt for more fuel for the fire, but the others in the scouting group insisted on going anyway. They weren't too far away from town, and the Dead Forest was off to the east a little ways from that, so Rina shouldn't have anything to worry about, right?
They left her to keep watch of the hut, the same hut that contained a few supplies that would help them search for better metals to craft those weapons the blacksmith wanted. It was easy so far, as no one had come by. But after an hour, Rina started to get worried about her team. Where were they? Were they alright? Did they get ambushed by something, or get trapped somewhere? Did they wind blow them away?
The creaking of the medium sized hut spooked her a little as she peered out of the tiny window for the millionth time. The clouds were so filled with dust they appeared orange. That shrub growing out of the side of the cliff off to the left was almost fully covered by sand. What a terrible day to run out of fuel...
"Please come back..." she whispered to herself.

Species: Scarclaw with Black Footed Ferret

Abilities: Acrobatics, great speed and agility, quick combat, digging and dancing
Background: Rina was born in the desolate midwest of North America in one of the larger Scarclaw domains. When she was young, however, a war brewed up with the Humans, killing most of her family in the process. She was left to her own wits, escaping with a few cuts, broken bones and a broken heart, until she eventually crossed into the south west region. There she met another group who luckily adopted her into the domain with the intent to raise her to be strong enough to combat the Humans and exact her revenge. As she grew, she learned more about the history between the two races, but wasn't sure if the Scarclaws were completely in the right. She continues to fight her logic with her cultural upbringing, leaving her often confused and morally ambiguous as to who she should trust and who can bring peace to the nations around the globe.
Appearance (will draw later): A dark-skinned short female with thick brown and black hair, sharp teeth, tiny claws, blackened hands and feet with a thin, long tail. She has round pink eyes, a longer nose with a black spot on its tip, a toned body usually donning in a blue dress with blue boots.

A girl with a facial veil and goggles runs past the bodies of the Scarclaws she'd just hunted down. Her long, dusty blonde hair flowed behind her as she kept her Fox ears hidden inside of her hair, the white tufts of fur that were on the tips of them giving her hair a sort of white halo effect. Her bushy Fox tail flicked away some sand that had gotten onto it, showing it's burnt orange-like color and white ring of fur near the tip of her tail. She had a lithe, lean build, two plasma pistol's strapped to her forelegs in their holsters. From what information she was given by the last Scarclaw she'd hunted down, they had another partner. A girl by the name of Rina? Supposedly she was a ferret or something. She wasn't really paying attention.
As she reached the location that she had been told about, she spots a small hut in the distance and narrows her jade-colored eyes.
Is that the place I'm looking for? I can't tell.
She carefully uses the sand blowing in the wind outside of the hut to nimbly sneak around to the back of the place before peering into the window. She only let herself get a glance of the small girl inside of the hut before she quickly moved so that she wasn't spotted. She moved her hand to her pistol holsters. Time for another hunt....

Rina paced about the hut, her eyes darting about the stash of tools, then back to the locked door. She stopped, stood in the center of the structure and looked up to see trickles of sand leaking in from the stick and leaf-crafted roofing. She brushed pieces of sand off her hair and ears as she heard a faint patter that sounded different than the wind outside. She was eager to find out if it was her group, but why would they not just rap on the door like normal? It couldn't be them.
She gently lowered herself to the ground to pick up a set of throwing knives she had buried beside a crate, her eyes shifting around the room in case something came up to surprise her. What could it be? A predator? A human, maybe? With the knives held tightly in her hands, she rose up and moved carefully towards the door.
She unlatched the hook, and the door swung freely open, the sandy winds startling Rina a little before she squinted her eyes for a better focus. Being part ferret, she really couldn't see well, and the storm made it all the worse for her to detect visual movement. Still, it was her job to protect the hut for her team. She had to find out if anyone was out there.

The young fox girl watches the ferret girl leave the hut and she gets a small smirk on her face. It was time to strike. Carefully moving through the small storm of sands swirling around the two of them, she taps the right holster on her foreleg and what looks like a small, high-tech cartridge jumps out of it. In one swift motion, the gun's two barrels spring out of place and into the fox girl's hands. Just in time too because the small ferret girl had just begun to circle around back to the hut near the two of them.
Sneaking up behind her, she cocks her pistol and takes aim at her. Before speaking, she swivels her ears for anymore surprises in the immediate area. Hearing nothing, she shouts at her.
"Don't move. Otherwise I'll put a hole in your head." She tells her, aiming straight for her head to signal that she was serious.

Her tail flicked upward and her feet shifted on the ground lightly, detecting the movement coming up from behind her. She could only turn part of the way around before the stranger threatened her.
The one eye that was visible glared intensely at the fox girl. From what she could see, she had two guns - very well-crafted pieces of equipment, she noted, definitely not from around here - and looked like she was on a mission. But what mission was that? Was she after their supplies?
"State your business on this mountain," Rina snarled.

"That answer your question? I was told that a ferret girl was here. You tellin me that that's not you?"
She asks her, keeping her pistol trained on the ferret girl.

((OOC: Thanks! Like Decoda, Rina's based on a preexisting character I made over a decade ago, so I figured she should receive the same kind of "reboot" in a different kind of story! Also, Rina never actually mentioned the supplies she was stashing...))
Rina lurched back as the blast slashed her face, the sand in the wind stinging the fresh wound. Her teeth ground against each other, furious at this girl's actions. What was she after, Rina herself?! Why?!? What did Rina do other than try to survive in a rather unforgiving world? The fact that she wasn't actually answering the question and just shooting away irked her, as well. She wanted to cut her down now, but that wouldn't solve any of the problems. It might make things worse if this crazy lady wasn't alone...
"I am Rina, the ferret Scarclaw. Who are you and what do you want with me?!" she asked again, louder and more angry that the last time she spoke. Her joints loosened up, despite the pulsating pain in her cheek, ready to dodge any more bullets she would fire.

The fox girl tightened her grip on her pistol's handle and trigger when Rina became angry with her. She narrowed her jade colored eyes at her.
"I am Catia, a Half-Breed. As for what I want...."
She cocked her gun to fire again, this time aiming for her head again.
"I want you dead."
Just as Catia's about to fire, a shot rings out and hits her in the knee. She lets out a cry of pain and crumples onto her knee before quickly swiveling her fox ears to find the source of the gun shot. Finding it, she growls and holsters her pistol to run.
"This isn't over Scarclaw! I'll be back for you!"
She snarls at her before running off out of sight. Moments later a group of Scarclaw men burst out of some nearby dead brush and look around for where she'd went. A smaller female dressed in a rather angelic looking garb comes out behind them. She looked very young, about Rina's age with smaller white and tan feathered wings sprouting from her back. She had a white down feather in her hair and long dusty blonde hair. Her eyes were an deep green and amber color and she walked over to Rina as a larger Scarclaw barked orders at the others to find the girl that'd just ran off. The girl smiles at Rina.
"Are you okay? That must've been scary."
She asks her, the other men searching the surrounding area while the largest one watched them. He was obviously the leader of the group with a very muscular build and wolf-like features. He was also considerably larger than the other men were and at least twice Rina and the other girl's size.

She was stunned beyond belief at what she heard Catia say. Why did she want her dead? What had she done to warrant such hatred and anger from a Half-breed?! As she was about to question it, the mysterious gun-weilder was chased away by the gang of Scarclaws that had suddenly appeared. Rina was up in defenses once more, but noticed they weren't after her, either; in fact, one of them had actually spoke to her in the kindest voice she had heard in a long time.
She was quite beautiful too. What was she and her group doing out here? Rina then eyed up the leader of the group, him being the loudest one, he was hard to ignore. She couldn't actually hear what he was shouting, as her ears were still ringing with Catia's words...
Finally she snapped out of it when she was asked if she was alright, dropping part of her defensive stance and nodding to the friendly girl.
"Yes, I-I don't know what happened... I was in charge of watching my... Where are my..." Rina choked out, starting to shake from sudden realization. Catia left in the direction her group went. Chances are, she came from that direction too... Her group would not be returning, and the thought of that crushed her.

The larger Scarclaw growls but nods.
"Grrr....fine. But she's your problem!"
He tells her, stomping off to look for the missing Half-Breed girl. The angelic garbed girl turns back to Rina and smiles brightly at her.
"That settles that! My name's Monica. What's yours?"
She asks her.

"Monica," Rina repeated, trying to get the name down. She watched Scar leave them, slightly concerned and mistrusting of the hulking wolf-like Scarclaw.
"My name is Rina. That girl, Catia, she said she was looking for a ferret girl... Me," she told her in a low voice, her eyes wide and shaking with nervousness. "Where would you take me?"

Monica smiles warmly at Rina before reaching into her side pouch and quickly making up a patch. She puts it on Rina's cut face before responding to her question.
"I'll take you somewhere where you'll be safe and sound. And I wouldn't worry too much about Scar and the others. They're a bit grouchy sometimes but they're good people. They won't hurt you I promise."
She reassures the young girl before gently taking her hand to lead her behind Scar who was still skulking around and looking for Catia. She turns to her as they walk.
"You're really lucky you know that? That girl Catia's a Scarclaw bounty hunter. I don't know why she was after you but chances are that your comrades had had something valuable that she was after. We've been looking for her for a long time but she always seems to get away from us before we can catch her."
She explains to Rina, a sympathetic smile on her face.
"I'll take you somewhere where you'll be safe and sound. And I wouldn't worry too much about Scar and the others. They're a bit grouchy sometimes but they're good people. They won't hurt you I promise."

The ferret Scarclaw's nose twitched as Monica applied the patch to her cheek. It felt cool on her face, much better than it stinging in the sharp winds that were finally settling down. She touched it with one hand, allowing the other to fold into her rescuer's. Rina looked around as they walked onward to this "safe" place, noting that Scar was very much determined to find this hunter of sorts. But could she really trust these people?
"I must be lucky, but, then again..." she began her response. "When she shot first, she could have just killed me and not wasted her ammunition to scare me. You're right; I think she probably was after something greater than our lives," she hypothesized, completely agreeing with what was said. Her eyes narrowed a little before speaking again.
"Why do you want to catch her? Are you bounty hunters as well? She said she was half-breed. Those are the ones engineered by science, but different from us, right?" Rina asked, knowing some of the history from listening in on townspeople talk about those genocidal wars. She didn't know everything though, clearly, which is why she asked questions rather than claiming things that might not be true.

Rina thought about that for a moment, not really understanding the mind of a ruthless killer like that. Killing out of hatred, with no other reason - what was that like? Is that what all Half-breeds did? She wanted to know more about these beings, looking to the ground as she walked alongside Monica.
"It's alien to me, but I feel like what she's doing is wrong. Why would she not just go after the ones who had made her so angry and not the innocent ones who just want to live life?" she asked, knowing well that Monica wouldn't probably have an answer to that, seeing as she just told her they didn't know much about Catia.
Rina then sighed lightly, seeing that Scar had recalled the mission for now; she wouldn't get any closure, either. Instead, she asked another question, her round ears bent in nervousness that it might get rejected.
"How do you know Catia? What happened to your group to make you want to chase her around like this?"

Monica sighs heavily when asked about why Catia wouldn't just take revenge and be done with things.
"I really wish things were that easy for Catia. She's....not had an easy life. This was all useful to know. Catia did have a past similar to her own - Rina could understand that, trying to push away memories of that battle that destroyed her home when she was younger. Tear gas, homemade grenades, flaming arrows had injured her before. She was glad to be alive, but remembering wanting to die before she got the town she currently stayed in. It was horrible, but like Monica had told her, she was lucky to be alive. Luck seemed to be very generous to her.
Somehow, even this deep insight didn't stop her from wanting to know more about this deep burrowing hatred for Scarclaws. Why did she refuse their help so frequently?
"Is it because she is only half of what we are?" she wondered aloud. "Or is it fear based?"
"I'm glad to hear that Scar helped you, and that you want to put a stop to her actions much more peacefully than simply killing her. I was once told by an old Scarclaw, 'violence doesn't have to be the answer.' Do you think he's right?" she asked Monica. "You can heal things, as a medic, and you talk more than any of the others here. Do you agree to there being another way?"

I believe that it can happen if we could one day all share the same peaceful ideals as Scar and I. But so long as there is violence in this world, peace is just another one of those things that can never happen."

"Looks like we're almost back to camp. The next town is a few days hike from here but at the very least we can stay here for the night and rest."

Rina looked on to see the camp come into view all while listening to Monica's wish. It was a long walk - a long day - it seemed, after realizing that the sun was setting. It was hard to tell the difference between night and day sometimes, what with all the chemical and industrial warfare making the sky dusty and cloudy with harsh pollutions. Rina and most Scarclaws have gotten used to it, but it was sad to know that as long as there was violence, they would never get to see the clear night sky filled with stars.
"Thank you for your help, Monica. Can I do anything to help you?" Rina asked, looking at the girl. As a child she was brought up with some manners, one being return a favor. This resonated strongly with the ferret girl and she lived by it whenever the exchange was possible.

Monica looked up at Rina in surprise when she was asked if there was anything she could do to help her out. She smiled and shook her head nevertheless.
"Don't worry about it. Just stay here with us tonight and we'll take you back to town first thing tomorrow morning. Then you'll be able to decide on what you want to do once you're safe and sound."

Should she ask more about the group and what they did? About what else went on in the world that they had seen from their travels? Or was it about time to ease tensions and nervousness...?

When the small group had reached the camp, Scar barked a few more orders that made the others relax and go to mill about while he nodded to Monica and left to do his own things. Monica led Rina to a small tent that had some food and water in it and handed her some bottled water and a ham and cheese sandwich, taking a turkey and mayonnaise one for herself.
She listened to Rina's question as she led her inside of a second larger tent next door to the one with the food and water and sat down at a small table. She motioned for Rina to sit down next to her as she finished her question.
"There's more of us than just what's here but this is about a third of our guild I think. The other two third's are in Triol northwest of here. Why? Does it make you nervous that there're a lot of us?"
She asked innocently.
She listened to Rina's question as she led her inside of a second larger tent next door to the one with the food and water and sat down at a small table. She motioned for Rina to sit down next to her as she finished her question.

Rina watched Scar from the corners of her eyes as he went off to command everyone about. It didn't seem like anyone in the group held as much authority as he did, especially when no one else spoke up against him, so she suspected that he was the official leader of the group - possibly along with Monica. She made a mental note of that, and followed her into the tent.
Accepting the food and water easily, sniffing it first to detect its contents, she sat down in a hunched fashion once at the table. As Monica spoke, Rina quickly scarfed down the water and sustenance, listening to her with her eyes locked on the girl.
Wiping her mouth on her wrists, she looks away to think of a response. It was somewhat true; but she was more concerned about what they did with such large numbers. Was this a band of hunters, all in search for Catia, or did they have a much bigger motive? Did each sect have leaders like Scar and Monica, or did they all obey these two? Rina lifted a clawed finger to her lips thoughtfully before stating, "It's still a different concept for me. I've never been around such a large group before, all dedicated to something so mysterious. What else do you do?"
